Overview
Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that runs in your terminal, offering codebase understanding, multi-file editing, and direct action on your code. It's particularly powerful for Trix integration because it can understand your entire project context, connect to the Trix MCP server for memory access, and help you build memory-powered AI applications.
Claude Code excels at understanding your codebase, connecting to the Trix MCP server for 140+ memory tools, and helping you build sophisticated memory-powered features.
Installation
Install Claude Code with a single command:
npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-codeAfter installation, authenticate with your Anthropic account:
claude auth loginClaude Code requires an Anthropic API key. You can get one at console.anthropic.com.
Setting Up Your Trix Project
Create a CLAUDE.md file in your project root to provide persistent context
about your Trix setup. This helps Claude Code understand your project structure and make
better suggestions.
# Trix Memory Integration
## Overview
This project uses the Trix memory platform for [describe your use case].
## Tech Stack
- Framework: [React/Node.js/Python/etc.]
- Trix SDK: [@trixdb/client / trixdb (Python) / Trix (.NET)]
- API Base URL: https://api.trixdb.com
## Trix Configuration
- API Key env var: TRIX_API_KEY
- Default space: [your space name]
- MCP server: @trix/mcp (140+ tools)
## Key Files
- `src/services/memory.ts` - Trix memory service
- `src/utils/search.ts` - Search and retrieval helpers
- `.claude/settings.json` - MCP server configuration
## Common Tasks
- Store memories: client.memories.create({ content, space_id })
- Search memories: client.memories.list({ q, space_id })
- Manage spaces: client.spaces.create({ name })
## Known Issues
- [List any known issues or workarounds]With this context file, Claude Code will understand your setup and provide more accurate assistance.
Common Workflows
Initial Trix SDK Setup
Ask Claude Code to set up Trix integration from scratch:
claude "Set up Trix memory SDK in this project. Include:
- npm install @trixdb/client
- Memory service with store and search functions
- Environment variable configuration for TRIX_API_KEY
- TypeScript types for memory objects
- Basic error handling"Claude Code will analyze your project structure, install the SDK, create service files, and configure environment variables automatically.
MCP Server Setup
Connect Claude Code to Trix via the MCP server:
claude "Set up the Trix MCP server so you can access my memories directly:
- Configure @trix/mcp in .claude/settings.json
- Use my TRIX_API_KEY environment variable
- Verify the connection works with a search"Memory Pipeline
Build a memory ingestion and retrieval pipeline:
claude "Create a memory pipeline that:
- Ingests conversation messages as memories
- Adds metadata with user_id and timestamp
- Searches for relevant context before LLM calls
- Injects retrieved memories into prompts"Search Optimization
Tune semantic search for your use case:
claude "Help me optimize Trix memory search:
- Set up metadata filters for my space
- Configure search with appropriate limit and threshold
- Add hybrid search with keyword and semantic matching
- Test with sample queries"Agent Memory Integration
Add persistent memory to an AI agent:
claude "Add Trix memory to my AI agent so it can:
- Store learned facts about users
- Recall relevant context for each conversation
- Organize memories by space per user
- Reinforce useful memories over time"Advanced Features
Multi-File Editing
Claude Code can make coordinated changes across multiple files. For example, when adding a memory-powered feature:
claude "Add a memory-powered context system:
1. Create memory service with store/search methods
2. Add middleware to inject context into LLM calls
3. Create TypeScript types for memory responses
4. Add error handling and retry logic
5. Write tests for the memory pipeline"Claude Code will edit your service files, middleware, types, and tests in a single operation.
Codebase Understanding
Ask Claude Code to analyze your Trix integration:
claude "Analyze my Trix memory integration and suggest improvements:
- Are there any API usage anti-patterns?
- Can search queries be optimized?
- Are there missing error handling cases?
- What's needed for production readiness?"Git Integration
Claude Code can create git commits with descriptive messages:
claude "Add dark mode support to the Trix dashboard and commit the changes"It will make the changes and create a well-formatted commit message automatically.
Extended Thinking Mode
For complex problems, use extended thinking:
claude --extended-thinking "My Trix SDK client loses connection on page navigation.
Help me debug and fix this issue. The editor is in a React component
and we're using Rails with Turbo."Extended thinking mode makes Claude Code reason more deeply about complex problems, considering multiple approaches before implementing a solution.
Providing Better Context
Custom Commands
Create custom commands in .claude/commands/ for frequently used prompts:
#!/bin/bash
# .claude/commands/setup-trix-attachment
claude "Add Trix file attachment handling:
- Handle trix-attachment-add event
- Upload to $UPLOAD_ENDPOINT
- Show progress
- Update attachment URL on success
- Handle errors with user feedback"Then run it with:
./claude/commands/setup-trix-attachmentTrix-Specific Context
Add Trix-specific information to your CLAUDE.md:
## Trix Memory Patterns
### Storing Memories
```typescript
const memory = await client.memories.create({
content: "User prefers dark mode",
space_id: spaceId,
metadata: { source: "onboarding" }
});
```
### Searching Memories
```typescript
const results = await client.memories.list({
q: "user preferences",
space_id: spaceId,
limit: 10
});
```
### API Configuration
Base URL: https://api.trixdb.com/v1
Auth: Bearer token with TRIX_API_KEY
MCP Server: @trix/mcp (140+ tools)Tips for Best Results
- Be specific about your framework and bundler - "React 18 with Vite" gets better results than just "React"
- Share error messages - Include full error messages and stack traces when debugging
- Describe your goal - Explain what you're trying to achieve, not just what code you want
- Reference existing code - Claude Code can read your codebase, so mention existing files by name
- Use iterative refinement - Start with basic functionality, then add features incrementally
- Ask for explanations - Request comments and explanations for complex code
Claude Code has 200K+ token context windows, so it can understand your entire codebase. Don't hesitate to ask questions about how different parts of your Trix integration interact.
